Matthew King, a senior from Clemson University was selected as another one of our top five Costa Ambassadors for the Fall 2017 semester. The Clemson University Fly Fishing Club was founded in 2012 and with encompassing cookouts, bowling nights, fly tying nights, mentor programs, club tournaments, club camping/fishing trips, and small “F3T” type nights into the weekly plan the club has doubled in size within 1 year to 60 members! With many club sponsors including The Charleston Angler, this fly club is well prepared and is successful at targeting brown trout, rainbow trout, brook trout in the mountains, and striper in the lake.
Matt is a senior studying Wildlife and Fisheries Biology. From Rock Hill, South Carolina; Matt is passionate about fly fishing and hunting, particularly waterfowl hunting.
How did you start fly fishing? First fish you caught on the fly rod?
I got my first fly rod from Cabelas when I was a freshman in high school and started casting in my front yard that day and soon learned to cast into a 5-gallon bucket.
I was on a lake in the SC mountains in a little Jon boat with a family friend and I was throwing a white popper on the bank. About the second sloppy cast next to a stump a 2lb largemouth came up and crushed it. It got me hooked on fly fishing immediately, and the rest of the day we caught probably 50 bluegill and bass a piece. (Matthew King)
Favorite memory fishing?
My favorite memory was probably when I caught my biggest trout to date. It was in the Asheville, NC area and this was my first truly successful day trout fishing as I had already landed about 20 fish that day. I saw a few fish rising and threw on a PMD. I threw up under an overhanging rock and as soon as the fly hit the water a 22” rainbow came up and slammed it. I set the hook and he immediately took me to my reel. This was the first trout that I’ve ever had do this and I will never forget it. (Matthew King)
Your plan after college?
I plan to move out to The Montana/North Dakota area and work with waterfowl conservation while attempting to guide fly fishing on the side. Eventually I want to move back to coastal SC and manage waterfowl plantations and get heavily into red fishing. (Matthew King)
5Rivers would like to congratulate Matt and the Clemson University Fly Fishing Club on awesome past semester.
