The Cheeky and Wingo Summer Internship is for rising sophomores, juniors and seniors interested in learning more about entrepreneurship and the world of small businesses. Perfect for students interested in a career in business after graduation, or in pursuing an MBA, the Cheeky and Wingo Summer Internship is fast-paced, demanding and provides real-world insight into business operations.
Founded in 2009, Cheeky Fishing develops, manufactures, markets and sells high performance fishing reels, equipment and apparel. The company is dedicated to pushing the limits of product design to create fishing equipment that specifically aligns with the demands of a growing demographic of progressive fishermen. To that end, the Company launched a second brand in 2014, Wingo Belts, a manufacturer of belts, accessories and pet products geared towards outdoor and fishing enthusiasts. Cheeky Fishing and Wingo Belts are co-located and run side-by-side. With more growth and new product development on the horizon, this summer will be a great opportunity for the Summer Intern to learn more about running a small business.

The Cheeky and Wingo Summer Intern will play an essential role in assisting with the day-to-day operations associated with running a small business. He or she will assist in a variety of areas including marketing and social media, events, product distribution, inventory management, and industry relations. In addition to day-to-day operations, the Summer Intern will have an opportunity to learn about other areas of business including new product launches, business strategy, customer service, finance, and accounting.
The Cheeky and Wingo Summer Intern will also lead at least one summer-long project, the focus of which will be determined as the internship start date nears. Possible topics may include new dealer research, e-commerce development, search engine optimization, and social media campaigning.
Marketing and Social Media:
Cheeky Fishing and Wingo Belts takes a multi-pronged marketing approach that includes guerilla marketing, traditional print and media advertising, and social networking. Daily and weekly tasks for the Summer Intern will include developing website content and other promotional materials, marketing analytics and posting to social media. In addition, though not required, candidates with skills in photography, video editing and graphic design will spend time developing their skills in these areas.
The Summer Intern will also assist in coordinating events that take place during the summer. Specific tasks will include organizing logistics, securing vendors and/or sponsors, and attracting guests. Strong communication and organization skills are a must.
Product Distribution and Inventory Management:
A clearly defined distribution strategy is critical to any business. In fishing and outdoor gear, there are several channels by which products reach consumers: direct sales, wholesale, and through guides, sales reps, pro teams, etc. Organizing and understanding a distribution strategy, and how it differs in each case, is fundamental to Cheeky and Wingo’s business operations. A typical week for the Cheeky and Wingo Summer Intern will provide exposure to all of these distribution channels through the fulfillment of orders, shop research, guide outreach, geographical analysis, and inventory management.
One of the most exciting aspects of working for Cheeky Fishing and Wingo Belts is interacting with the many great people in the industry. Specific tasks may include email and phone correspondence with guides, shops and pro team members, travel to industry events, and networking opportunities.
The ideal candidate has a record of academic excellence and is highly motivated – there is no task too small or too big when running a small business. Other qualifications include:
Interest or experience in fishing
Strong communication skills
Ability to multi-task
Familiarity with social networking sites like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter
Proficient in Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint
Well organized and strong attention to detail
GPA of 3.0 or higher
More Information and Application Process:
The Cheeky Fishing and Wingo Belts Internship is a ten-week position (flexible start date in May or June) requiring approximately 35 hours per week at our Arlington, MA office. The Intern will work directly with the Associate Business Manager, the CEO, the Marketing, Service and Fulfillment Specialist, and our office dog Bernie. The Intern must have reliable transportation to and from the office, as well as a laptop computer. Compensation for the Cheeky Fishing Internship will be a $1,500 summer stipend.
